'Constructs' is the basis for most of the work I have undertaken since 2008. After spending a number of years working with acrylic sheet work has been developed by taking a purely experimental approach and using a variety of different techniques.
Elements of Change
'elements of change'
I was fascinated by the image of the moon taken by Apollo 16 from outer space in 1972. This was the starting point for the piece ‘elements of change’.
I thought about the moon and the sun and the reputed power of their eclipses and helpfully two full eclipses took place whilst I was working with this theme. Are they powerful? Do we feel them? Are they an indicator of the energy in our solar system that affects us all? And, if they are in the right place at the right time, do they make it easy for us to ‘make things happen’?
'constructs 1'
The work centres on the development of weaving with a variety of unusual structures and the integral use of acrylic sheet within the work. As it progresses I create my own ways of working; there are now no traditional techniques to follow and I have to find my own way; developing a new set of rules to inform the process.
Compositions start from a simple geometric basis and works towards the characteristics of harmony and discipline. Starting with a two dimensional frame it builds upon itself creating three dimensional structures and forming patterns of stability between the various entities
Made of discs of acrylic sheet the finished piece looks light, airy. It is highly reflective and casts many shadows depending on the surrounding environment and how it is lit. On a stand in a big show the shadows draw people to it and then they see the reflections flying over themselves and around the room it can be quite exciting.
